Handmade Alternative Bouquet

Fresh flowers are often a popular choice for weddings, but nowadays, soon-to-weds have more options and they can get creative as much as they want. Weddings are no longer just a celebration of a couple's union, but also their uniqueness as well. The classic bridal bouquet are traditionally comprised of fresh flowers, but more and more brides are choosing 'out of the box' bouquets to match their theme to make the whole affair more interesting.

A Story of Love, Passion and Commitment

As a child, I’ve always wanted to become involved with activities that would give me an opportunity to express my creative side. Back then, I looked forward to our grade school’s art and home economics classes. I enjoyed every bit of it, and coming home after a school day, I would make my own projects focused on what I learned from class. I recall making many a handmade bookmark and greeting card, which I was able to sell to childhood friends.

Looking back, it’s no surprise that I decided to settle down and focus on designing and making handmade creations through Palamuti,  although the journey to reach this point of artistic freedom has come as no easy feat.  Before all this, I experienced changing and diverging from one career path to another. I taught pre-school for a while and then eventually decided to move to a non-profit government organization focused on social development. After that, I went into public relations and got a job as a marketing officer for a private corporation. It was during my last job that I decided that I wanted to do something more creative, though at the time I had totally no idea. There was also the fear of leaving behind financial security. After four years, I finally quit my job and started to follow my passion for creating.  In a timely manner, an opportunity to design accessories presented itself.

I have no formal education in design or the arts. My college degree was social sciences, and the idea of putting up a business was a far cry from my past career experiences. In fact, making accessories was introduced to me by my sister, after she took an accessory making workshop for a summer class. She showed me the basics and lent her accessory tool kit to me, and I’ve been designing and creating ever since.

At the beginning though, it was never more serious than a passionate hobby. I would hunt for great finds, stock up on supplies, and make accessories simply to pass time. I would give my creations as gifts, and occasionally friends would kindly offer to buy them from me. I couldn’t make accessories full time though, because of a full-time job. However, after a long absence from making accessories, friends and relatives started asking me to make more. Finally, I decided to quit my job, and start my journey as an artist and entrepreneur. This new found passion differs from my past careers, in that it means more to me than just a new job, but it gives me an opportunity to reach out and make a difference in the lives of others.

Each and every day offers a different set of challenges.  Challenges I happily greet with open arms, because I consider it a gift to be given the chance to create and empower. I’m overjoyed in the way that my passion for Palamuti and its vision, is being spread and shared by our artisans and our clients. Please continue to share in our stories, but more importantly, allow yourself  to be inspired by hope, beauty and change.

The Beauty of Handmade

"Buying handmade can become a total lifestyle choice. Choosing to buy handmade is just like choosing to buy local produce. You simply cannot compare mass produced products to artisan created goods in terms of inspiration, quality, and attention to detail." - HANDMADEOLOGY
For clients based in the USA, we have the following handmade accessories on stock. You can purchase them on our website. You can also email michelle@palamutishop.com for your inquiries. We accept bulk orders.

As a philosophy, our designs are made in limited quantities due to the amount of time and work needed to complete a single piece. This best describes the effort needed for our bead embroidered creations. The extent of time devoted to a single piece rests on the intricacy of the design and the materials involved. As a result, every piece is a unique work of art and fashion, lovingly made by the hands of highly skilled Filipino women artisans

Though technology has come so far in terms of playing a part in production and design, such as 3D printers and CAD, there are some forms of art in most mediums that can ONLY be produced by human hands. The sublime quality of a masterfully made, handcrafted piece of design certainly isn’t going anywhere, as long as there are people who appreciate them for the inherent beauty that only the human soul is capable of bringing.

So, today, become an inspiration to others by supporting local handmade products!

Inspiring Stories: Meet Beng

Beng was part of the first group of mothers we trained from our chosen urban poor community. She became interested in making handmade accessories when another one of our beaders, Tess Dulce, started making accessories in her home. Whenever, she and the other mothers would call Tess for afternoon socializing, Tess would turn down the invitation because she was working on Palamuti Accessories. Beng, and other mothers became curious and asked Tess if they too can make handmade accessories during their spare time.

Thus, our relationship with Beng and the others based in Tess’ community began. We conducted a one-day training for this group of mothers and eventually assigned simple projects which they can make at home. We provided the materials for them to use in their projects and when the products are done, we pick and pay them upfront. Beng, as with most of the other mothers, is a full time housewife. She stays home to take care of her son, while her husband works 8-10 hours a day on a full time job. Palamuti became an opportunity to use up her idle time while providing additional income to her family. Her love for crafting made her a good candidate as a Palamutibeader

We took notice of Beng’s natural talent for crafting, and eventually started assigning her with more complicated assignments. She was best at making our Hiraya Scarf Necklaces, expertly producing them at great speed. She was especially helpful during the late Christmas rush of 2012, wherein we had a high demand for our handmade scarf necklaces. During that time, we only had a few beaders who were skilled enough to be able to make the embellished scarves. Beng was one of those beaders that you could count on.

With her earnings, she was able to put up her own "mini-grocery" in her community, which she manages along with her husband. We are very proud of Beng. She truly lives up to the “Hiraya” namesake, which means “hopes and dreams”. For us at Palamuti, we are glad to share these dreams and small successes with our beaders. It’s also a dream come true for us that our mission of spreading hope, beauty and empowerment, was able to make a difference with Beng.
